all swimming pools leak. Many swimming pool owners make the fatal mistake of |
believing that water loss is due |
to evaporation as opposed to a leak without undertaking proper detection
|
techniques. |
|
| The three most common misidentifications of a leak include:- |
- Overfilling the pool
- Heavy rainfall; or
- Hot weather
|
Just how serious can a leak become? Even a minor swimming pool leak can cause substantial damage, extensive water loss and result in great expense.
| There are two major two types of leaks:- |
- A Static Leak – the most common leak, which causes the same amount of water loss all the time; or
- A Pressure Leak – which causes a noticeably greater water loss when the filtering system is running
|
Leak Inc Pty Ltd ensures a non-destructive leak detection approach, and most pool and spa leaks can be found and repaired without major disruption or expense.
Our sophisticated detection equipment along with Leak Inc Pty Ltd’s qualified technicians can find even the smallest leak – even one the size of a pinhead.
| The following are common signs that your pool may have a leak and investigations may be required: |
-
You notice standing water near the pool deck or filter shed -
visual inspection of the equipment may turn up something simple such as escaped water from a faulty O-ring or gasket. But especially if you notice soft mushy spots, uneven grass or sinking pavers around the pool area, an underground plumbing leak may well be the cause.
-
The pool or spa is losing more than 1 cm of water per day - the rate of evaporation varies from place to place, depending on the relative humidity, wind, air temperature and water temperature and other weather factors. If you frequently use your pool or have children playing in the pool, splash-out should also be considered. A simple bucket test can confirm leak suspicions.
-
Abnormal water consumption - topping up your pool from time to time is a normal procedure to ensure there is enough water to run your filter. However, placing your hose in the pool to replace missing water on a daily basis should lead you to believe that something is wrong. You should refer your water bills for high water consumption. If this is the case, investigation for a leak should begin.
-
Extraordinary algae growth or discoloration of water - this indicates an imbalance in the water chemistry, which can occur when the water level does not stay constant and the pool continually keeps being refilled with tap water.
-
Fluctuating chemical consumption - when water leaks out of a pool, it carries dissolved chemicals with it. These chemicals will constantly need to be replaced to make up for the losses.
-
Loose or falling tiles, or cracking of the cement pool deck - because the surrounding ground around the pool is becoming unsettled by the presence of excess water, a leak is certainly possible.
-
Missing pool parts, fittings or tile grout - all pools will obviously get old in time. With constant wear and tear, be aware of missing or broken parts around fittings and accessory areas and missing grout around the tiles. These can all be causes of a leak in your pool.
-
Mysterious gurgling sounds - when something sounds amiss, there’s usually a good reason to investigate the source.
